JP/Ministry seek to tighten optical disc import

The Industry Ministry plans to employ tighter regulation for the import of blank optical discs and also machines, tools and ingredients needed in the discs production, a director general said Wednesday.
Benny Wachyudi, director general for agro and chemical industries at the ministry, told Antara news agency that currently there was not any regulation limiting or monitoring production of optical disc, which supports the massive reproduction and distribution of pirated CDs, DVDs and VCDs.
Benny said that later in the year, the ministry would revise a number or regulations related to disc production.
He said the ministry recorded that more than 162 million pirated CDs and 95 million blanks CDs were produced last year.
Previously, the police have called on the Industry Ministry to review the existing policy on the issuance of permits for optical disc production and import, saying most discs sold domestically have no tax stickers.
Police said that pirated CDs, DVDs and VCDs were causing Rp 520 billion (US$55.6 million) a month in losses to the state.
