From: Antara News
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Industry Minister MS Hidayat said he would relax the SNI standardization procedures as a means of protecting the country`s industries by conducting cooperation with private research institutions and assessment agencies.

"I want the procedures of SNI (Standar Nasional Indonesia) certification not to be done in the `business as usual` ways as is the case now," he said after the ministry`s working meeting here on Thursday.

Indonesia now only has 43 SNIs which have been made compulsory while around 40 SNIs are still in the process of notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In a discussion on the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) earlier, the chairman of the Indonesian Iron and Steel Industries Association (IISIA), Fazwar Bujang, said the SNI certification process so far was more difficult for domestic than for imported products.

"The SNI certification process for imported products is quicker than for domestic products because the Product Certification Institute was given travel orders abroad," he said.

Fazwar asked the government to create a clear and quick certification procedure so that the aim of protecting the country`s interest through the SNI certification could be achieved.

He admitted that the SNI certification process for manufacturing products is not easy because of the uniqueness of each industry.

"Some would not use SNI because the process to get it is difficult and costly making their products more expensive. In this case the government could play a role," he said.(*)
